I’ve found that vitamin therapy can help get rid of toenail fungus by helping to boost the body’s natural defence mechanism. Vitamin deficiencies usually don’t cause toenail fungus conditions but a diet that contains a good supply of vitamins and the right kinds of nutrients can aid in promoting strong nails. Healthy nails with a good blood supply will ensure that the microorganisms which cause fungus can’t enter the nail bed and set up an infection.

Prevent Toenail Fungus Naturally

I am a strong proponent of prevention and this is always the best strategy to treat a toenail infection. If, however an infection has gained access to the nail good dietary practices, intensive vitamin therapy and natural or prescription remedies can all work together as a fungus treatment to cure this sometimes stubborn condition.

Here are some of my favorite diet and vitamin therapy options which can all be combined to help to get rid of nail fungus and prevent future attacks.

1. Keratin

Nails are made up of keratin which is a form of protein that is also found in teeth, skin and hair. Nails need a good supply of it to ensure health. Keratin supplements are available at health stores but excessive amounts may result in hyperkeratosis - a condition of excess keratin resulting in thick, rough skin, coarse hair. Proteinuria may also occur if protein levels are excessive.

2. Antioxidant Nutrients

Fruits and vegetables are an important part of our diet and at least five or six portions should be eaten every day to make sure the body is getting enough nutrients. In particular, dark coloured fruits and vegetables would assist the body to get rid of toenail fungus and maintain nail strength. Good options are red grapefruit, dark leafy green vegetables like spinach and rich reds like tomatoes and peppers. Whole grains, free range eggs, fish and seeds will also help promote nail health.

I am a firm believer that food is our greatest defence against illness and disease and vitamin supplementation should never be relied upon to replace vitamins lost by poor eating habits, laziness or not taking the time to learn correct shopping habits.

However, when the body succumbs to fungal toenail infections it is time to ensure an adequate supply of the following:

You probably already know that calcium is good for nail growth and health and I am repeating it here because its importance cannot be emphasised enough. Milk, yogurt and cheese are all high in calcium and should be eaten daily to ensure an adequate supply. Once you have infected toenails it may be worth considering a calcium supplement to help promote healing and prevent it spreading.

Vitamin C – to guard nails against free radical damage.
Biotin – usually found in trace amounts in foods but available in supplement form to help strengthen and protect nails.
B-Complex
Vitamin A – deficiencies cause low protein absorption.
Vitamin E
Vitamin D – deficiencies cause poor calcium absorption.
Zinc
Iodine
Iron
Copper
Selenium

5. Probiotics

Fungal infections can be a sign that there is an imbalance of friendly bacteria located in the gut. Taking probiotic supplements like acidophilus and bifidobacteria help restore friendly bowel bacteria and boost natural immunity.

Also, drink at least eight glasses of water every day.

If prescription and natural measures fail to work make sure to follow up with your doctor as you might need different medications. Fungal infections may be early indicators of kidney, heart and lung ailments or anaemia, so see your doctor if you are not satisfied with your treatment.
