Using Natural Herbs
“What Everyone Needs To Know Up Front”
These days a lot of people are looking to natural herbs to help heal a variety of ailments. Some feel that they are a replacement to modern medical procedures but I feel that is a dangerous stance to take. Although natural herbs can provide a great help to the healing process, few of us are skilled enough at self diagnosis to make it a viable replacement to visiting a doctor. A good alternative instead would be seeking a medical herbalist if there is one in your area.
Since people have been seeking herbal remedies more and more, it was only a matter of time before studies showed just how useful they are. This in time led to certified medical herbalists, licensed to perform herbal treatments reliably. But don’t let that stop you from looking into herbal cures and remedies for yourself. There are just a few things you should know up front before putting blind faith in it.
Do Your Research!
• Knowledge- This is the first and most important thing you’ll need before you begin working with herbal remedies. Before you ingest anything, be sure of what it is, what it does, and what other effects it may have on your body. Just like taking medicine, you are putting something new in your body. Make sure you are not allergic to anything you plan on using. If at all possible, consult your doctor first to check for allergies if you aren’t sure.
• Quality- How fresh are the herbs you’re purchasing? Is it possible to grow them yourself? If possible get them as fresh as you can so that you can dry and store them yourself. Properly cared for, stored natural herbs can be good for a year or two, but those displayed in a store in glass jars in bright light may have little use any more. The potency of natural herbs for use in herbal supplements degrades quickly if they are not properly preserved.
Some Things To Be Careful Of With Herbalism
Finally there are always special cases to consider. In these situations, it is best to consult a medical herbalist just to be safe.
• Pregnancy. This can be a complicated issue for any medical treatment, holistic or conventional. There are some herbal remedies that are unsuitable for a pregnant woman.
• Children are another matter as well. This is another time when research is very important. This is particular true when deciding on how much to give them.
Hope For The Future
We need to have realistic expectations. We would all love to find the panacea to our ills, to take an herbal supplement that can reverse a life time of bad eating habits.
Some people go for an herbal treatment expecting an instant cure for a long standing medical problem like diabetes or heart disease.
Realistically, how can any work instantly? Natural herbal remedies do work, of that there is little doubt even in the medical community. But just as with conventional medicine, herbal remedies do take time.
Natural herbs have been used to cure disease and many ailments for a long time and by many different cultures. In fact it was the first evidence of medical practice known to man. In the growing renaissance toward holistic health and herbalism, many of these healing methods are finding their way back into common use.
Many people take echinacea when illness starts up, or enjoy a cup of chamomile tea once in a while to soothe the nerves for example. Perhaps in the future, natural supplements will assume a greater role in health and wellness, allowing us to avoid the side effects most prescription drugs are burdened with.
