What Causes Cellulite?
“Find Out What Causes Cellulite and How to Control It”
What causes cellulite? This is possibly one of the most frequently asked questions in today’s body conscious society. The causes of cellulite are multi-dimensional and addressing the issue requires several changes in general lifestyle, dietary and exercise habits. You may also benefit from creams applied to the areas (usually knees, hips, thighs and buttocks) affected by cellulite.
There are many cellulite creams available on the market today and many make claims that are unsubstantiated. I urge you to do research before buying a cellulite cream to determine whether it is effective against cellulite. Cellulite is caused by trapped areas of fat and a cream to get rid of cellulite should be specially formulated to combat this specific type of fat build up.
Main Causes of Cellulite
Cellulite may be caused by a variety of factors including:
- Your hormonal profile
- Your genetics
- Diet and exercise habits
It is not conclusively known what causes cellulite but the female hormones and in particular estrogen is thought to be implicated in its formation. Estrogen is believed to be an important causative factor for the following reasons:
- The condition affects predominantly women.
- Cellulite often occurs for the first time during puberty when estrogen activates sexual maturation.
- Cellulite worsens during pregnancy, breastfeeding, menstruation and estrogen therapy.
- Insulin, thyroid hormones and cortisol are implicated in the formation of cellulite and these hormones are influenced by estrogenic imbalances.
- Hereditary factors such as gender, influence cellulite formation.
- Fatty tissue distribution is inherited and this certainly influences the extent of cellulite formation and its location on the body.
- The way in which your body reacts to estrogens and cortisol can be genetically mediated.
Diet and Exercise:
As previously discussed, we do not know precisely what causes cellulite but eating a diet rich in fats and carbohydrates can certainly worsen and contribute to the condition. This is because when a large amount of these types of foods is eaten it causes hyperinsulinemia and an increase in the level of fat storage. In hyperinsulinemia there is too much insulin in the blood. Dietary choices are a direct cause of this state and proper attention to diet can reverse it in the short term.
Exercise levels are also important in the control and prevention of cellulite and regular exercise can aid in any cellulite prevention program.
How Abdominal Weight Gain Can Explain What Causes Cellulite
When weight is gained around the abdomen it causes more estrogen to be retained in the body. When weight is lost, estrogen levels decline and in this way we are able to combat cellulite in two ways, namely by reducing fat levels in the body and aiding in the prevention of cellulite by achieving better hormonal balance. When the hormones are balanced less weight gain occurs in a cyclical pattern.
When a diet which is low in fats and carbohydrates is consumed the insulin levels in the body are better controlled. This means that cellulite forming lipids are reduced. Fat and protein reserves will instead be used for energy production and this in turn results in weight loss. To protect protein reserves it is a good idea to take a high protein isolate supplement while changing dietary practices in the short term.
Once the amount and appearance of cellulite has been improved you should continue to limit fats and carbohydrates and begin to include carbohydrates with a low glycemic index such as brown bread and pasta and whole fruits and vegetables. This will help control insulin levels in the body and prevent further formation of cellulite.
